********* The SKETCH exhibition offers a unique dive into the secret archives of graffiti. Through an exceptional ensemble of more that 200 pieces, this event unveils a completely unknown practice of this movement : sketching, from the preparatory sketch to the final piece. Displayed over more than 280 m2, the exhibition allows us to discover the extent, the riches and the importance of sketching in graffiti. From photographs and original pieces to sketch books, videos and interventions in situ, SKETCH reveals pieces to the visitor that are rarely presented to the public. Like all artists, the graffiti artist engages in a preparatory study based on a single work on paper, before it is mixed with other works, or offered up to and imposed on the public gaze, criticised or admired. If graffiti’s nature is to be “in the street” with a “vandal” role, the core of its creation takes place in a workshop, is confined on paper and is the subject of conscientious and passionate work. School books are filled with graffiti , sketch books get shared, there are influences and sharing, and styles are spread. At a time when urban art is receiving recognition by the public and institutions, the exhibition « SKETCH, from sketching to graffiti » provides an historical and essential perspective that contributes to recognising this culture and its artists as part of a true artistic movement. The exhibition focuses on the French graffiti scene. By observing the French precursors, we can grasp the major stylistic contributions of artists who then inspired all of Europe. Unlike exhibitions which up until now have only featured and categorised the American school, « SKETCH, from sketching to graffiti » triggers a deep reflection on neglected moments of the history of contemporary graffiti and proves the aesthetic richness of France over the last 30 years.
